Children's Hearing Assessment
From £70

As a CQC registered clinic, we are qualified to test children of all ages. The type of test we do depends on the age of the child, ranging from listening games and behavioural tests, through to recording brain waves on sleeping babies.

Symptoms of hearing loss in children

For infants, a checklist is available in the baby’s personal child health record (often referred to as the Red Book), which can assist you in monitoring your child’s hearing as they grow.

In older children, potential signs of hearing issues may include:

  • Difficulty paying attention or concentrating

  • Failing to respond when their name is called

  • Speaking loudly or listening to the television at high volumes

  • Trouble determining the source of a sound

  • Mispronouncing words

  • Notable changes in academic performance or behaviour

  • Frequent requests for repetition

Causes of hearing loss in children

Hearing loss in children can stem from various causes. Some instances are temporary, such as those that occur after a cold and resolve on their own. Others may be more persistent and necessitate medical evaluation and treatment.

Common causes include:

  • Earwax blockage

  • Congestion build up in the middle ear (glue ear)

  • Ear infections

  • Foreign bodies in the ear canal

Did your child pass their newborn hearing screen? You should find this information in their red book.
