Audiometry & Tympanometry

A standard pure tone audiogram typically serves as the initial step in any diagnostic, health and safety or medico-Legal assessment of ear function.

Our audiometry tests are conducted using calibrated DD450 headphones and begin with an otoscopic examination. Routine testing includes air conduction measurements at 125Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, 3000 Hz, 4000 Hz, 6000 Hz, and 8000 Hz (up to 16,0000Hz is available if needed). Bone conduction is tested at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, and 4000 Hz as needed. Background noise during testing is always below 35dBA (verified by a calibrated sound level meter). Tympanometry is carried out afterwards and assesses middle ear function.
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE)

Otoacoustic emissions are tiny echo's that can be recorded from a healthy inner ear in response to sound. This response provides a frequency-specific, objective measure of cochlear function, allowing us to assess inner ear performance without requiring cooperation from a client. If there is any dysfunction in the middle ear, the OAE response will not be recorded, so testing is only conducted if tympanometry confirms normal middle ear function. An OAE is typically absent if cochlear hearing loss exceeds 30 dB, making it a reliable indicator of normal cochlear function, though it does not provide information about hearing thresholds. Additionally, OAEs can help detect early noise or ototoxic damage to the inner ear before a change in hearing thresholds is detectable.
Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR, BSER, BSERA, BAEP)

An ABR is used to evaluate the integrity of the auditory system from the inner ear to the brainstem, and can serve as an indicator of neurological conditions. These measurements are also known as Auditory Evoked Potentials, and are widely used as an objective measure of hearing function in children. While the ABR assesses the function of the auditory pathway up to the brainstem, it does not evaluate the pathways leading to the auditory cortex higher in the brain. ABR is also known as Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry.
Cortical Evoked Response Audiometry (CERA; CAEP)

CERA is used as an objective measure of hearing across the entire auditory pathway, making it the gold standard for Medico-Legal hearing assessments. It provides a frequency-specific measure of hearing function. Unlike OAE or ABR, which can be recorded from clients who are asleep or sedated, CERA requires the client to be awake and engaged. Typically, clients are asked to read a book or watch a subtitled film during the test. A pure tone audiogram is also performed before the CERA assessment.
